Work Experience & Training

This year we are delighted to announce some wonderful opportunities for you to get involved in the festival and be a part of our ever expanding team! You just need to be aged between 16-25 and resident in Dumfries & Galloway - the courses are absolutely free!

You'll receive training and mentoring from professional photographers, filmmakers and our front-of-house live sound team; you'll also be mentored throughout the festival weekend acting as our official photographers, filmmakers or sound engineers; you'll work alongside professionals in their field, gain valuable, real-life, skills, experience and evidence that will look great on your CV and the time you spend with us can also go towards your Saltire Award.

Workshop & Mentoring

Photography Workshop with David Moses

  • Throughout Festival
  • On Monday 4th July, before the festival, you'll take part in a photography workshop at the Newton Stewart Centre hosted by David Moses, a professional freelance photographer. You can find out all about David and his wonderful photography by visiting

  • Getting comfortable with your camera
  • How to set your camera up for difficult situations
  • How to create portraits
  • How to photograph performances
  • How to interact with people
  • Editing Images
  • Post Processing Images
  • Delivering Images

You'll then be mentored by David throughout the festival, acting as our official festival photographers for 2016, so you'll get real life experience at interesting and inspiring live music events which help build your portfolio. It will be packed with information and practical experiences. A positive, can do attitude is an absolute must.

Live Sound Shadowing
Workshop & Mentoring

Live Sound Shadowing with Dave Miller

  • Throughout the festival
  • Join the festival's sound team and develop your skills in live audio. Participants will get to see how a show is organised from a sound point-of-view in a valuable, "real world", setting, in a range of festival venues. A great opportunity for hands-on experience and discussion with professionals. Booking essential.

Workshops & Mentoring

Filmmaking with Cree Studio

  • Throughout Festival
  • You'll attend film making workshops on Monday 20th June, Monday 27th June and Monday 4th July 2016 from 10am - 12noon at the Cree studio, Newton Stewart, covering camera use, sound, lighting, editing, interviewing, directing and producing. You'll then join us at the festival as our official film crew over 7th - 9th July 2016 in various venues and locations. You'll then take part in the final editing to produce a high quality film of the 2016 festival - great for your CV!
  • Workshop content:
  • Filming – using camera to film the event and interviewing people who are part of the event
  • Editing – learning about and using video editing software in the studio. The film editor is the person who assembles the various shots into a coherent film, with the help of the director. (more of a behind the scenes role – after the event)
  • Producing - The producer is involved throughout all phases of the film making process from development to completion of a project
  • Interviewing – this involves being a confident individual that will interview participants throughout the different events
  • Lighting - involved with setting up and controlling lighting equipment
  • Sound – this involves learning and coordinating the sound of the film using equipment such as audio recorders and microphones
  • Marketing/gathering feedback – during the event and preparing relevant forms to gather information
  • Behind the scenes filming – involving all of the above
