Workshops - Saturday 9th July 2016

The festival weekend is the perfect opportunity to learn a new skill, sharpen up your existing skils and to gain knowledge and experience from some of the best traditional music players in their fields. This year we have workshops in concertina, fiddle, singing, bodhrán, whistle, highland dancing, live sound, pipes and drums so there's something for everyone and if you're under 25 then it's completely free (early booking advised)!

Writing Workshop with Findlay Napier

  • An experienced tutor Findlay has taught here in Scotland and abroad. He has worked with primary and secondary age school children, prisoners, people in rehab, adult long and short courses for various local authorites and with the students at The RCS. He also runs a songwriting retreat at Moniack Mhor Creative Writing Centre with Karine Polwart.

Live Sound Workshop with Dave Miller

  • Join Front Of House engineer Dave Miller and explore the world of live sound production. In this introductory workshop, Dave will discuss the roles within the live sound industry and explain what to expect from the job. The session will look at PA system specification and design, microphone techniques for the stage, basic audio signal processing and creative mixing. Participants will then “mix a show” for themselves and receive feedback on their performance. Full of tips, tricks and advice for anyone starting out, or looking at a career in live sound.

Bodhrán Workshop with Michael Drain

  • Michael Drain has been playing bodhrán for nearly 40 years. He was an original member of Craobh Rua, playing throughout Europe in the early 80's with Seamus McMathuna & Seamus Sands. He later formed Ciolar Ciot with Seamus and well known Belfast musicians Davy Maguire & Tom McGonigle. He has played the Belfast traditional music scene from the 80's to present day. This is a superb chance to learn bodhrán from one of Ireland's bset players - open to all ages and all levels.
