Opening night of the 6th annual Newton Stewart & Minnigaff Traditional Music & Dance Festival and what an opener! Opening the night, BBC Radio Scotland's Young Traditional Musician of the Year 2019, Benedict Morris with his trio, a rising star in folk music in the outstanding Kitty Macfarlane and, to close in style, the fabulous Irish-American multi-instrumentalist and singer Steph Geremia with her trio. Hup!

Steph Geremia Trio
Steph Geremia is an Irish American multi-instrumentalist and singer highly regarded as one of the finest musicians of her generation. Perhaps best known as a traditional Irish flute player and as a mainstay of the critically acclaimed Irish group, Alan Kelly Gang, she has also impressed as a singer, presenting her own identity of a breathy Celtic vocal style mixed with a hint of her American roots.  Steph will be joined by Scottish powerhouse Aaron Jones (Old Blind Dogs) on bouzouki/guitar/vocals and fiddle maestro Ben Gunnery (Riverdance / Barrage).

Kitty Macfarlane
Kitty Macfarlane is a songwriter and guitarist from Somerset, whose music is rich with visual imagery and written with an eco-eye. From the starling murmurations on the Somerset Levels to the lowly eel's epic transatlantic migration, and the small part we ourselves play in a much bigger picture, her songs are bound by the underlying theme of mankind's relationship with the wild.

Benedict Morris Trio
20-year Glasgow fiddle player Benedict Morris was recently named as BBC Radio Scotland's Young Traditional Musician of the Year and his performance at the festival this year continues the proud tradition at Newton Stewart & Minnigaff Traditional Music & Dance Festival of featuring the BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician of the Year, which it has done every year since the festival first began back in 2014.

6th annual music festival

The 6th annual Newton Stewart & Minnigaff Traditional Music & Dance Festival will take place over 12th-14th July 2019 and, after another outstanding programme of events in 2018 which saw us hosting Scottish Highland Dancing competitions and, as ever, some of the biggest names in traditional music, it looks set to be another packed programme and is really living up to it's reputation as one of the best rural arts festivals in Dumfries & Galloway.
